August 3, 2017. Our program featured Amanda Alderfer who is the WTEA and Athletic Events Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association. Their mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the rate of dementia through the promotion of brain health. This disease has an astonishing and increasing affect upon our nation. Over 5 million people in the USA have Alzheimer’s and that number is expected to increase to 16 million by 2050. It is the 6th leading cause of death and a new person is diagnosed every 66 seconds. Current annual costs are estimated at $259 billion. There are about 25,000 patients just in Lehigh and Northampton counties. The Association offers a 24/7 help support line (1-800-272-3900), an online forum for care givers, and a large local support group. Their major fund-raiser is the Walk to end Alzheimer’s scheduled for September 30 at ArtsQuest center at SteelStacks. Joker’s Treasure: Ron Gano found the suddenly not-so-elusive Joker and took home $81.
